The Artlume Ecosystem

Welcome to the first in a series of articles on The Tech Behind Artlume: Here we will cover how many platforms Artlume supports – and the challenges of developing apps for different smart TV ecosystems

Welcome to the first in a series of articles where we’ll shed some light on the tech behind our TV and mobile apps.

The scale and breadth of our development

To make art accessible to all, one of Artlume’s key goals is to ensure the platform works seamlessly across a wide range of devices.

Artlume is compatible with:

LG Smart TVs
Android-compatible Smart TVs and streaming devices like Chromecast, Apple TV, and Fire TV Stick
iOS and Android smartphones

This sets us apart from platforms like Samsung Frame, which require the purchase of a specific (and often expensive) TV.

Proprietary technology – built for TV first

Artlume is first and foremost a TV app—designed for large screens—while the mobile app enhances the experience by making navigation smoother and more intuitive.

Our partnership with LG Electronics allowed us to launch Artlume in December, starting with webOS (LG’s smart TV operating system). We’ve since rolled out versions for tvOS (Apple) and Android TV. Development for Samsung Tizen is now complete, and we’re in the final stages of submitting the app to their content store once all documentation is finalised.

To summarise:

Three live TV apps (webOS, tvOS, Android TV)
One more TV app (Samsung Tizen) pending release
All are native apps, built using platform-specific tools and languages—requiring ongoing updates and resubmissions whenever changes are made

Seamless Cross-Platform Experience

Artlume is also available on iOS and Android smartphones. While the mobile app doesn’t act as a remote control, it makes navigation easier and works in sync with the TV app. Any playlists you create on your mobile will automatically appear on your TV.

What Holds It All Together

Managing multiple platforms is no small task as can be testified by our Head of Technology, Ash Lyndhurst "Building a seamless experience across multiple smart TV platforms is no small feat. Each ecosystem—whether it's LG, Apple TV, or Android—has its quirks, performance constraints, and unique UI expectations. Our challenge is ensuring that Artlume delivers the same stunning visual experience no matter where you display it."

Our developers maintain:

Four TV apps and two mobile apps
A robust API that syncs content across platforms
A central database storing over 15,000 images
AI integration for users to create their own artwork
Web3 functionality for future expansion into users being able to display their NFTs
A powerful Central Management System (CMS) for managing content, artist portals, and data analytics
